Thirteen long years ago, Mortal Kombat was merely an arcade game that you could go down to your local arcade bar and play for 25 cents. Now, it is one of the most immersive and competitive fighting games ever released. Mortal Kombat X brought back all the characters we know and love, and then some. Sonya, Johnny, Sub-Zero, Scorpion and many others return in this installation of the Mortal Kombat series…and they’re not alone! NetherRealm has paired with WB Games to bring us the bloodiest, most gut-wrenching Mortal Kombat ever…in HD! Eye gouging and impaling has never looked so good!
Much like the previous Mortal Kombat games, there is your regular story mode. Only, this time, Story mode is like watching an interactive movie complete with over two hours of cut scenes! Interactive you say? Much like the cut scenes from the Resident Evil franchise, you’ll be button mashing to avoid attacks while you watch it all unfold. So don’t put your controller down for a second!
Introducing, Factions! Mortal Kombat X has taken competitive play to a new level with the brand-spanking-new Faction play. Choose between five different Factions and compete against the others for the title of Champion! Every win, stage interaction, and even Kombo attack will bring your team closer to that sweet gold medal. If Koins and experience aren’t a good enough reward for becoming Champion, your team also gets to build your very own Tower for other teams to fight in! But don’t expect it to be easy!
My favorite addition to Mortal Kombat X is the updated Krypt. For those of you who played the older Mortal Kombat games, you remember the Krypt as being a top-down view where you can select the headstone you want to crack open and receive your loot after paying however many Koins. In this version, however, they made the Krypt as if it was another game! You’ll be able to walk through it and explore the different caves and catacombs while also looking for special items to unlock other parts of the Krypt! Be on your guard, you are not alone. At random moments, wolves, spiders, and even zombies could attack you! However, if you manage to defeat them you will be rewarded with more Koins for your spending pleasure.
Let’s not forget about the Towers! Mortal Kombat is renowned for its Tower mode, making you defeat enemy after enemy in increasing difficulty. Well, prepare yourself for even more Towers as well as the Klassic Tower from the original Mortal Kombat! You all remember Test Your Might, don’t you? Re-live the most obnoxious button-mashing Tower ever made! You can also try the Test Your Luck Tower, which faces you against a computer with a random modifier. Modifiers add anything from raining missiles to opening up portals everywhere! Traditional Towers aren’t the only ones though; there are also Living Towers that change daily and weekly. Beating these Towers will grant you additional Koins and Faction XP!
Everybody loves Sub-Zero and Scorpion. They’re the poster children of the Mortal Kombat franchise. However, Mortal Kombat X introduces some brand new characters that are some of our hero’s kids! My personal favorite, Cassie Cage, is none other than the daughter of Sonya and Johnny. With Sonya’s badass military tactics and Johnny’s egotistical attitude, Cassie is definitely one of the funniest and most intimidating new arrivals. There is also Jacqui Briggs, Jax’s daughter, Takada, the son of Kenshi, and Kung Jin, who is the son of Kung Lao. Needless to say, this new generation of fighters is going to be just as good, if not better, than their parents. In addition, there are also going to be extra characters available for purchase. Such as; Tanya, Tremor, Goro, Jason Voorhees, and the freaking Predator!
If you have yet to pick up Mortal Kombat X, I highly recommend you do so this instant! This is much more than just your regular old fighting game. NetherRealm and WB Games certainly outdid themselves and brought us the most incredible fighter of this and any generation!
